Honjo International Scholarship Foundation (HISF) is currently seeking scholarship applications from foreign students who are planning to attend a graduate school at a Japanese university after April 1, 2012. A total of 15 to 20 scholarships are available for the courses commencing 2012.

HISF provides scholarships to bright students who are struggling to study under different conditions in developing nations as well as to those Japanese students studying abroad, to help them learn advanced technologies and improve their good intentions will serve as a bridge connecting Japan with the rest of the world in culture and mutual friendships.

Eligibility

The student is registered to attend a graduate school in Japan and does not possess Japanese citizenship. His or her academic achievement as well as moral character is exemplary. He or she must be considered to be in need of financial aid due to extenuating financial circumstances.
The student must be registered to attend or have been accepted to attend a graduate school after April 1, 2012. He or she must be able to provide any of the following documentation: a certificate of enrollment, letter of admission or a letter attesting to the fact that the student has been accepted.
To be eligible, students enrolled in a PhD Program must have been born after March 31, 1976. Those enrolled in a Master’s Program must have been born after March 31, 1981.
The student must be able to assure the committee that he or she will be able to secure employment in his or her home country after graduating from a graduate school.
The student must have a deep understanding of international friendship and goodwill, and be committed to make his or her contribution.
The student must be able to carry an everyday conversation in Japanese. Interviews will be conducted in Japanese.

Amount and Duration of Scholarships

¥200,000 ($2600) per month for 1 or 2 years
¥180,000 ($2340) per month for 3 years
¥150,000 (1950$) per month for 4 or 5 years

Travel expenses for conferences, other expenses will be covered as per the scholarship rules

PhD Scholarship on Novel Diagnostic Methods and Devices for Personalised Treatment of Cancer

A 3-year PhD scholarship is open within the European FP7 project “Biomedical engineering for cancer and brain diseases diagnostics and therapy development EngCaBra”. DTU Nanotech is carrying out research in the areas of micro- and nanofabrication including nano- and biotechnology. The department offers outstanding career opportunities and has strong connections to the industry. The NaBiS group (www.nanotech.dtu.dk/nabis) at DTU Nanotech focuses on developing state of the art biosensor systems for biochemical analysis in integrated systems.
The project EngCaBra is an interdisciplinary collaboration between universities and companies in different countries in Europe. EngCaBra’s goal is the realisation of novel methods and devices for analysis of cellular and molecular mechanisms related to cancer and brain diseases.
The successful candidate will work on testing, functionalisation and integrating the sensor systems into a fully automated microfluidic point of care system. About the Positions

The main task of the students will be to perform world-class research
on hybrid knowledge representation and reasoning, and hybrid planning
and plan execution monitoring, for robotic systems. Hybrid in this
context means that the robot is capable of inferring new information
about its environment from a variety of information of different
nature. For instance, the robot will consider flexible temporal
requirements (e.g., serving food while it is warm, but not too soon
after the previous course) together with causal requirements (e.g.,
serving a meal satisfies the goal of feeding the guests) and resource
constraints (e.g., dishes from the previous course must be cleared as
space must be made for the new course). Such requirements should be
upheld both during planning and on-line execution monitoring.

The successful candidates will be employed as PhD students with Örebro
University for an expected duration of three years. They will work
within the local RACE team at Örebro University, but they will also
collaborate with the other European partners in RACE, both remotely and
through physical meetings and research visits. A limited amount of
teaching may also be part of the PhD student's duties.

About the RACE Project

RACE, "Robustness by Autonomous Competence Enhancement", is a European
Union FP7 project. The overall aim of RACE is to develop an artificial
cognitive system, embodied by a service robot, able to build a
high-level understanding of the world it inhabits by storing and
exploiting appropriate memories of its experiences. Experiences will
be recorded internally at multiple levels: high-level descriptions in
terms of goals, tasks and behaviours, and sensory and actuator skills
at the lowest level. RACE will develop methods for conceptualizing
acquired experiences so as to extend the robot's planning and execution
capabilities beyond preconceived situations.

AASS's role in RACE concerns (1) the development of knowledge
representation and reasoning schemes suited for reasoning about
multiple types of experiences; and (2) the use of this acquired and
inferred knowledge for plan generation and execution. Constraint-based
techniques will be explored for both representation and reasoning and
planning/execution monitoring purposes, and in particular a meta-CSP
approach for integrating temporal, resource, causal and spatial
reasoning will be examined.

The RACE consortium consists of six European partners: the University
of Hamburg (Germany), the University of Leeds (UK), Örebro University
(Sweden), the University of Osnabrück (Germany), the University of
Aveiro (Portugal), and the technology transfer institution HITeC
e.V. (Germany).

About the Robot-Era Project

Robot-Era ("Implementation and integration of advanced ROBOTic systems
and intelligent Environments in Real scenarios for the Ageing
population") is a European Union FP7 project. The objective of
Robot-Era is to develop complete advanced robotic services integrated
in intelligent environments, which will actively work in real
conditions and cooperate with real people to provide favourable
independent living, improving the quality of life and the efficiency of
care for elderly people. Robot-Era will demonstrate the general
feasibility and effectiveness of these systems, as well as their social
plausibility and acceptability by end-users.

The role of the AASS in Robot-Era will be to develop an advanced,
modular and customizable ambient intelligence infrastructure within
which the above services can be provided. A unique feature of this
infrastructure will be that it will span across several environments,
ranging from homes to streets and public places, in order to provide
ubiquitous assistance to senior citizens. AASS will also supervise the
development of one of the project's two testing sites: a smart
apartment inside a large residential facility for senior citizens.

The Robot-Era consortium consists of twelve European partners from
Sweden, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom, and it is coordinated by
Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa, Italy.

The Food Security Center (FSC) is a university center of excellence in development collaboration at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany. FSC is one of five excellence centers of the pro-gram “exceed – Higher Education Excellence in Development Cooperation”, which is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds of the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of Germany. FSC’s mission is to make effective and innova-tive scientific contributions in research, teaching, and policy advice to eradicate hunger and achieve food security in collaboration with partner research and education organizations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and national and international development and research organizations. Thematically, FSC’s activities deal with issues of sustainable food availability, food access, food use, and food utilization. More information is available from www.foodsecurity.de.
Scholarship description
FSC awards 10 scholarships for PhD students from developing countries (see OECD DAC list) for a period of 36 months, beginning September 01, 2012 (with a month German language course). The Center wishes to attract outstanding PhD students pursuing a career in academia or development collaboration. The scholarship aims at increasing their previously gained scientific knowledge and skills relevant to food security related issues. The successful candidates will receive scholarships for participating in the PhD program “Global Food Security” to conduct their doctorates.
The scholarship is given for a stay at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Germany. The monthly grant is EUR 1,000 (for the time in Germany, EUR 500 for the time of the field research). In addition, FSC pays for traveling to/from Hohenheim. Health insurance and other costs must be paid for from the stipend.

Selection criteria
Besides the general selection criteria for the PhD program “Global Food Security” (see announce-ment of the PhD program “Global Food Security”), the following criteria have to be met additionally, if applying for an “Excellence scholarship”:
-    Latest academic degree completed no more than 6 years prior to start of scholarship;
-    Indication for return to his/her home country and institute;
-    Be a national of a developing country according to OECD DAC list.

The applicant has to submit the application documents for the PhD program “Global Food Security” and indicate in FSC’s application form, whether s/he applies for an “Excellence scholarship”. In ad-dition to the general application, the applicant has to provide proof regarding the additional selection criteria mentioned above.

The selection of the candidates will be in December, 2011, the program will start on September 1, 2012.
All accepted applications will be selected according to the following criteria:
1.    Fulfillment of announcement criteria of the PhD program “Global Food Security” (cf. “Ad-mission” and “Application”);
2.    Quality of proposal and project feasibility.
For all pre-selected candidates, FSC will look for a supervisor at the University of Hohenheim. Only after a professor of the University of Hohenheim has accepted the candidate, s/he will be ultimately selected and invited to join the PhD program “Global Food Security” and – if applied for a scholar-ship – awarded an “Excellence scholarship”.
The selected applicants will be contacted no later than January 25, 2012.

Ingin merasakan studi di Negeri Ginseng, Korea? Beasiswa yang satu ini layak Anda coba! Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), Korea, menawarkan program untuk mahasiswa yang ingin melanjutkan program Master maupun PhD. Waktu yang dibutuhkan untuk program master biasanya 2 tahun, sedangkan untuk PhD adalah 4 tahun. Untuk program master dan Ph.D yang terintegrasi (integrated program), waktunya maksimal 7 tahun untuk menyelesaikan kuliah.
Ada beberapa macam bantuan yang diberikan oleh GIST, yaitu Full-tuition Scholarship yang memberikan biaya penuh untuk menyelesaikan 2 tahun master, atau 4 tahun untuk PhD.
Selain itu, ada pula bantuan Monthly Stipends, yaitu mahasiswa setiap bulannya menerima 220.000 won bagi mahasiswa program master, dan 250.000 won bagi mahasiswa Phd. Bagi mahasiswa internasional yang memiliki IPK di atas 3, akan diberikan tambahan 120.000 won.
Bantuan lainnya, Free Dormitory Housing, yaitu jika Anda tinggal di dormitory atau asrama GIST, Anda tidak perlu membayar biaya asrama, dana monthly stipends Anda akan dikurangkan 30.000 won untuk biaya dormitory ini. GIST juga memiliki apartemen bagi mahasiswanya yang sudah menikah, dan Anda bisa menyewanya.
Ada pula bantuan Experiment Costs, Anda akan dibiayai untuk melakukan penelitian. Lainnya, bantuan Thesis/Dissertation Research Expenses, Research Assistanships, dan Medical Insurance Fees.

Apa saja persyaratannya?
* Dosen tetap dari PTN atau PTS;

Bagi Anda yang tengah berburu beasiswa, ada baiknya mempersiapkan segala sesuatu sejak sekarang. Sebab, ada sejumlah tahap yang harus dilalui untuk memenangkan sebuah beasiswa. Tak cukup hanya mengisi formulir sesuai ketentuan, mengajukan esai yang menakjubkan, atau pun menyertakan surat rekomendasi yang meyakinkan. Beberapa pendonor beasiswa mensyaratkan wawancara sebagai penentu, siapa kandidat yang mereka pilih. Nah, mari bersiap diri, siapa tahu Anda akan menjadi salah satu kandidat yang diwawancara!

1. Ajak seseorang untuk berlatih mewawancarai Anda
Ini adalah ide baik yang bisa Anda lakukan untuk melatih kemampuan wawancara sebelum Anda diwawancara. Dengan bantuan salah seorang anggota keluarga, Anda bisa mereka-reka pertanyaan yang akan diajukan oleh panitia nantinya.Misalnya:
* Apa prestasi akademik terbesar Anda?
* Apa kegiatan ekstrakurikuler yang Anda ikuti?
* Bagaimana cara Anda menghadapi hambatan besar dalam hidup?
* Apa penghargaan yang pernah Anda menangkan?
* Apa yang ingin Anda lakukan setelah lulus dari perguruan tinggi?
* Bagaimana Anda melihat diri Anda ketika telah menjadi sarjana?
2. Datang tepat waktu
Pada hari wawancara, jangan terlambat! Hal tersebut bisa menjadi nilai tambah dan membuat kesan baik dengan tiba lebih awal. Terlihatlah sebagai seorang profesional.

3. Menjaga sikap
Cobalah untuk tidak gelisah atau tampak gugup saat wawancara. Duduk diam dan buatlah kontak mata dengan pewawancara. Buat posisi tubuh Anda terlihat tenang dan terkesan profesional. Jangan takut dengan setiap jawaban yang Anda berikan. Karena gumaman seperti ”um” atau ”ah” dapat membuat jawaban Anda terlihat ragu-ragu dan tampak tidak yakin.

4. Berpakaian sopan dan tepat
Anda tidak harus berpakaian secara formal, tapi semi formal yang tepat untuk wawancara beasiswa. Celana panjang dan kemeja panjang adalah paduan yang tepat untuk wawancara seperti ini. Tapi bagi pria, jas dan kemeja akan membuatnya terkesan lebih profesional. Sedangkan gaun atau rok serta kemeja bisa menjadi paduan tepat bagi wanita muda. Namun, apapun pakaiannya, usahakan agar tidak ada kerut.

5. Mengetahui diri sendiri
Selain menyadari tindakan dan tubuh Anda, Anda harus menyadari apa yang Anda katakan. Jika Anda tidak mengetahui jawaban dari pertanyaan yang diajukan, jangan mencoba untuk menjawab dengan jawaban palsu. Mintalah penjelasan lebih lanjut atau katakan Anda tidak tahu. Hal ini juga menunjukkan bahwa Anda menyadari seberapa jauh pengetahuan Anda ketika menjawab lebih cepat.

6. Ajukan sedikit pertanyaan
Sementara menunggu waktu wawancara, siapkan beberapa pertanyaan untuk panitia. Pertanyaan mengenai pemberi beasiswa atau sponsor beasiswa jika hal tersebut tidak dijelaskan dalam formulir aplikasi beasiswa. Memiliki beberapa pertanyaan seperti itu, membuat Anda terlihat siap. Selain itu, Anda terkesan nyaman dengan bahan yang anda pelajari.

7. Cobalah untuk tidak terlalu gugup
Tidak diragukan lagi, bahwa banyak pewawancara menginginkan si pelamar menjadi gugup. Jadi bersiaplah. Persiapkan diri dengan baik dan jangan tunjukkan bahwa kamu gugup. Coba Anda pikirkan: aplikasi saya sudah cukup baik, sehingga saya bisa menyisihkan beberapa calon penerima. Ini sudah memasuki setengah pertempuran!
Biarkan fakta bahwa Anda dipilih dari banyak orang tumbuh di kepala Anda. Hal ini bisa membuat kepercayaan diri Anda semakin bertambah.

Fully funded bursaries

These bursaries will be available on a full time basis over three years. Each bursary will consist of a stipend to cover living expenses and remission of home/EU fees. The stipend in 2011-2012 will be £13,250, in 2012-2103 £13,500 and in 2013-2014 £13,750 and there will be a small contribution to research expenses including travel to conferences.

Fees-only bursaries

The University also proposes to offer a limited number of "Fees only bursaries". These would be offered in all areas of the University research portfolio but would most likely to appeal to applicants in the area of professional practice who wish to register for a higher degree on a part-time basis.

Applicants for both type of studentship should hold at least a 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline or have a Masters level qualification. Applicants from outside the UK/EU would be expected to finance the difference between UK/EU fees and the University international fee.

The Software Engineering Research Group is looking for a full-time PhD student in the COMMIT project Allegio.
Topic: Evolvable Software Architectures

Industrial practice shows that it is extremely difficult to keep improving devices by adapting and extending the embedded software. Small changes often lead to unexpected consequences, due to unknown interactions and dependencies between parts of the system. Allegio aims at defining an integrating a set of methods and techniques to support a systematic “Right by Design” component-based software design approach for complex embedded systems. This ensures that incremental changes become predictable and meet the required system qualities such as performance and safety.
The contribution of SERG/TU-Delft is on investigating means to enable "Evolvable Software Architectures" for embedded systems in the healthcare domain. This research comprises (but is not limited to):

Evolution of large, complex embedded systems
Interface complexity and quality anlysis
Change impact analysis and prediction
Executable architectural models

The research will mainly be carried out at SERG/TU Delft in close collaboration with Philips Healthcare (iXR R&D) and the Embedded Systems Institute (ESI). The research will follow an industry-as-laboratory style: actual research problems are drawn from industry and solutions are evaluated in the industrial context, here Philips Healthcare.
These positions are full-time paid research positions, 4 years fixed term (with 1 year probationary period), according to the collective labor agreement of the Dutch universities (which can be downloaded from www.vsnu.nl). A postdoctoral scientist is required to join Dr. Ramanujan Hegde’s research programme on protein biogenesis at the ER. You will be involved in mechanistic studies of protein translocation across or insertion into the ER membrane. The primary approach will be biochemical dissection and reconstitution, but will also involve cell biological analysis and possibly imaging as part of an interdisciplinary and interactive group.

You should have (or anticipate obtaining within 6 months) a PhD in a biological subject with experience in the general field of protein trafficking. Extensive familiarity with biochemical dissection of complex pathways would be highly beneficial. Significant publications in these areas are an advantage.

The Center for Particle Physics and Phenomenology (CP3) of the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium) invites applications for at least TWO research positions aimed at obtaining a Ph.D. in experimental particle physics in the context of the CMS experiment. Research activity in the Center is equally strong on the theoretical and on the experimental fronts and collaboration between the two is on-going and very much encouraged. The experimental group of the Center has contributed significantly to the design and construction of the CMS silicon strip tracker and has been deeply involved in its commissioning and operation since the early stages. The Center hosts one of the two Belgian Tier 2 of the CMS GRID and includes a very strong computing team that helps CMS experimentalists to complete their research. The group is also involved in Research and Development programs related to possible extensions of the CMS experiment and to the Super-LHC. The NA62 experiment at the SPS accelerator of CERN has also been recently joined. The current experimental activities in CMS include:

The Service de physique des particules elementaires of the Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is offering a position to an outstanding student with a university degree to start a PhD thesis within the CMS collaboration at the LHC.

The Service is part of the InterUniversity Institute for High Energies (ULB/VUB), which combines the experimental particle and astroparticle research groups from the francophone ULB and the Dutchspeaking VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and presently numbers more than 70 physicists, engineers and support staff. It is involved in frontier research in large international collaborations: CMS (at the LHC), IceCube (astroparticle physics at the South Pole), H1 (DESY, Hamburg) and OPERA (CERN/Gran Sasso), and in R&D in data acquisition systems. It hosts a CMS Grid Tier2 computing centre.

The candidate will be involved in precise measurements of Standard Model processes and the search for physics beyond the Standard Model (Higgs, models with extra dimensions or supersymmetry) in the preparation of which the Brussels group in CMS has played a leading role in the last few years (HEEP). The Brussels group is also active in top physics and in the commissioning of the CMS tracker, which was partially built in Brussels.

The position, which implies frequent visits to CERN, does not involve teaching duties. PhD training is provided in an international context. The doctoral studies can take place in a context of cosupervision, leading to the award of a joint/double doctoral degree by the home institute and ULB. The thesis may be written in either French or English. The salary is competitive and includes all social security benefits (information is available on request to Prof. P. Vanlaer - see below).

Overview
Six PhD studentships in Statistical Methodology and Its Application at University College London.

The studentships are attached to the Department of Statistical Science at University College London, and a subset of them are UCL Impact awards. Impact awards support collaborative studentship projects with organisations such as charities, companies, government institutions and social enterprises. The impact awards are joint with Lloyds bank, Xerox Research Centre Europe (www.xrce.xerox.com), and NCR Labs, respectively.

UCL is a member of the London Taught Course Centre (www.ltcc.ac.uk) that provides additional training in foundations of Mathematics and Statistics. UCL also offers training via its graduate school.

UCL is among the top-ten research institutions in the world and the Department of Statistical Science is one of the three largest statistics groups in the UK having a unique combined strength in Statistical Methodology and Machine Learning. The studentships are based in the Department of Statistical Science which has over twenty full time members of staff, including Professors Tom Fearn, Mark Girolami, Valerie Isham, Sofia Olhede and Trevor Sweeting. Together with other groups at UCL the department forms the Centre for Computational Statistics and Machine Learning (CSML) (www.csml.ucl.ac.uk), which is part of the European Network of Excellence PASCAL (www.pascal-network.org).

Advanced Monte Carlo Methods for Images and Text (with Xerox) – Prof. M.Girolami
The Bayesian framework for statistical inference is largely dependent on numerical simulation for all but the most straightforward of statistical models. In the probabilistic representation of digital documents comprised of texts, images and embedded information, sophisticated statistical models are often required. It is hugely challenging to perform simulation based inference over these classes of models due to a variety of factors such as (1) exceedingly high number of parameters in the model, (2) the discrete nature of the configuration space, (3) lack of strong likelihood-based identifiability and (4) strong posterior correlation of parameters. This project will seek to develop generic Monte Carlo sampling methods that addresses some of the issues listed above. The research will be carried out in close collaboration with Dr Cedric Archambeau (cedric.archambeau@xerox.com) and Dr Guillaume Bouchard (guillaume.bouchard@xerox.com) . The successful candidate will have the opportunity to visit Xerox Research Centre Europe (www.xrce.xerox.com) on a regular basis.
Evolving Lead and Lag Times of Credit Cycles (with Lloyds) – Prof. S. Olhede
For policymakers and companies constructing accurate business and credit cycle indicators is pivotal for future planning, as well as for managing risk and troughs in cycles. Such indicators are constructed from observations of multiple time series, such as gross domestic product, production for certain sectors, employment, spread of interest rates, that is from collections of multiple observations of many different processes at several time instances. It is particularly important to identify leading credit cycle indicators in such data, as these will show effects of a changing financial climate ahead of other variables changing and thus they will allow for prior warning of a worsening or improving climate. This studentship will develop time series methods to estimate leads and lags, as well as the common cyclical structure in multiple time series, in particular accounting for evolving structure in the relationships to identify evolving leading indicators.
Geometric Markov chain Monte Carlo – Prof. M.Girolami
A recent paper read before the Royal Statistical Society developed sampling methodology based on Riemannian geometric principles and provided a way forward in systematically addressing some of the biggest challenges faced in modern day computational statistics. The ability to design proposal mechanisms for Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) that traverse geodesics and transform in a covariant manner across the statistical manifold brings great potential to what problems can conceivably be addressed. In this project the student will work on the further development and analysis of this methodology from a number of possible perspectives such as considering alternative geometries.
Probabilistic Models for Adaptive Content Creation (with Xerox) – Prof. M.Girolami
This research project will focus on the development of structured prediction models to build document templates and learn to customize texts or sentences according to user preferences and habits. Conditional language models to generate human readable text based on the specific target application and device appropriate algorithms for the generation of small pieces of text, such as introductory sentences will also be developed. This project will draw upon recent advances in Natural Language Processing tools, Machine Learning algorithms and Stochastic Optimization techniques, in developing intelligent document creation tools. The research will be carried out in close collaboration with Dr Cedric Archambeau (cedric.archambeau@xerox.com) and Dr Guillaume Bouchard (guillaume.bouchard@xerox.com) . Spatio-Temporal Statistical Models of Banknote Ageing (with NCR) – Prof. M.Girolami
A practical challenge to fully realising automated currency validation in Automated Teller Machines (ATM) is the variable quality of banknotes presented to the machine. It is desirable that a probabilistic generative model, and associated inferential machinery, of the ageing effects on banknote images be made available. This project will adopt advanced Bayesian modeling and inferential methodology in developing note ageing process models. NCR Labs collections of machine readable banknotes will be employed in formally assessing model adequacy as well as the ability to generate sample ageing profiles of banknotes. The theory, analysis, and methodology developed within this project will push the boundaries of spatio-temporal statistical modelling and presents a superb opportunity in making important advances in computational statistics in general.
Statistical Machine Learning methods for fMRI Analysis - Prof. M.Girolami
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is providing the means for both early detection of a number of neurodegenerative diseases and to study their origin and the mechanisms underlying them. Multivariate statistical methods show great promise in the systematic study and analysis of fMRI images and associated genetic data. There are still many methodological statistical challenges to be addressed in this research and the student will have the opportunity to work in a cross-disciplinary group seeking to develop appropriate statistical models and associated methods for this ongoing research.

As part of sub-measure 1.4 of the Lüneburg Innovation Incubator,
Leuphana Graduate School will grant

9 doctoral scholarships

to extraordinarily qualified candidates to promote young academics.

The scholarships, starting in the 2011-2012 winter semester, will be awarded in the following research fields:

Health tourism within the region
Renewable energies within the region
Internet media within the region
Health economy within the region
Sustainable agriculture within the region
Culture and region
Public administration and region
Entrepreneurship for regional enterprises

The doctoral scholarships will be awarded in the amount of €1,300 per month for a duration of up to 36 months.

The purpose of the doctoral scholarships is to encourage active participation in sub-measure 1.4 of Leuphana Graduate School within the scope of the Lüneburg Innovation Incubator under supervision of the visiting research professors or the project management and to enhance cooperation with the regional economy in the Lüneburg convergence region by carrying out projects of knowledge transfer or research and consultancy for the benefit of microenterprises as well as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The invitation to apply for a scholarship is targeted at extraordinarily qualified young academics working in the above-mentioned research fields or in any related discipline. Prospective scholarship recipients will be expected to do their doctoral projects within the scope of their particular research fields at Leuphana University of Lüneburg by reference to (regional) SMEs.

Scholarship application requirements:
1. Appropriate professional experience as evidenced by:
a) vocational training completed, or
b) qualifying internship experience of at least eight weeks, or
c) appropriate project work or final papers in any of the above-mentioned fields of research
2. Exposé of the doctoral project by reference to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and to the above-mentioned fields of research (five pages maximum)
3. Above-average grade point average in previous undergraduate studies (master's, Diplom, Magister, or any similar degree) as evidenced by the transcript of records or the undergraduate degree certificate.

The scholarship also serves to explicitly qualify the recipient in the field of teaching. This implies giving tutorials and providing other advisory services within the scope of Leuphana Graduate School's sub-measure for up to ten hours per week. In addition, the scholarships entail continuous and active participation in the program of study and in the research colloquia as well as enrolling in the relevant doctoral program at Leuphana University of Lüneburg. The prospective scholarship recipient will also be expected to move to the Lüneburg convergence region.

Please note that candidates applying for the scholarship starting in the 2011-2012 winter semester must submit their applications for admission to the Admissions Office of Leuphana University of Lüneburg. If, at the time of application, admission has not yet been granted, they must be enrolled in the doctoral program at the beginning of the scholarship term. Selection procedure

As part of the selection process, the selection committee will invite promising candidates for an interview. Prospective scholarship recipients are likely to be notified about six to eight weeks after the deadline for application. The scholarships will first be awarded for one year and will be extended upon request. The requirements for extension of the scholarship term will be sent to the applicant along with the notice of approval. The scholarship will be granted for a period of up to 36 consecutive calendar months. Semesters of leave of absence will generally not be covered by the scholarship. The Regulations on the Awarding of Doctoral Scholarships at Leuphana University of Lüneburg, as published on August 17, 2010 in the Official Gazette of Leuphana University of Lüneburg (GAZETTE No. 13/10), shall be legally binding.

1. The purpose of the scholarship is to attract outstanding international students to come to study in NCHU, which is in line and based upon the policy of MOE scholarship guideline.
The budget of NCHU Scholarship is derived from and set up by the university and/or supported by funds from outside of the school.

Who is eligible?

This scholarship is open to nationals of member countries of ASEAN* (except Singapore) to pursue a designated full-time Masters degree by coursework and dissertation at NTU.

* ASEAN or the Association of Southeast Asian Nations consists of Brunei Darrussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Bond

KOMPAS.com - Pemerintah Australia kembali meluncurkan program beasiswa Australian Development Scholarships (ADS), yaitu program beasiswa yang dibiayai melalui AusAID untuk program studi S-2 dan S-3 tahun ajaran 2011/2012 di universitas-universitas Australia. Beasiswa ini terbuka bagi sektor pemerintah dan swasta.

• Bantuan tutorial tambahan: yaitu biaya yang bila dibutuhkan sebagai bantuan tutorial akan diberikan pada siswa yang mengalami kesulitan mata kuliah tertentu untuk membantu proses belajar.
• Biaya perjalanan; yaitu penerbangan kelas ekonomi ke dan dari Australia pada awal dan akhir masa beasiswa.
• Kerja lapangan di luar Australia; biaya yang diberikan bila riset mencakup setidaknya 50 persen dari program, siswa dapat menerima satu kali tiket PP ke Indonesia untuk melaksanakanya.
• Anggaran pemukiman; biaya ini diberikan satu kali pada awal masa studi di Australia.
• Penyertaan keluarga; Keluarga (isteri/suami dan anak-anak) boleh ikut serta ke Australia atas biaya sendiri jika telah memenuhi persyaratan AusAID dan imigrasi.
• Biaya Hidup; biaya yang diberikan sebagai tunjangan hidup selama siswa studi di Australia. Besarnya jumlah tunjangan untuk perorangan atau berkeluarga adalah sama.
• Asuransi Kesehatan: skema ini diberikan bagi penerima beasiswa saja selama masa studi di Australia.
• Pelatihan Bahasa Inggris; program ini tersedia untuk tujuan akademis dan merupakan bagian dari beasiswa dan wajib diikuti.
• Biaya Perjalanan reuni keluarga: yaitu biaya untuk penerbangan kelas ekonomi ke dan dari Indonesia untuk setiap akhir tahun ajaran. PhD Scholarships at Singapore-MIT Alliance

SMA3 Graduate Fellowship

The Singapore Ministry of Education has established a four-year fellowship scheme for new doctoral students at NTU or NUS who will conduct their research at the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology Centre (SMART Centre).

The establishment of this Fellowship Programme is intended to attract to NTU and NUS the best and most talented doctoral students from Singapore, the region, and beyond and educate them to be future leaders in science and technology for Singapore and beyond. The Fellowship will provide them with the opportunity to be involved in the strategic research programmes at the SMART Centre and provide them with the opportunity to be co-advised by an MIT faculty member. The student may spend up to six months doing research at MIT.
The SMA3 Graduate Fellowship at SMART provides:
•up to four years of full tuition fees at the student's home university;
•a monthly stipend of S$3,200;
•a scholarly allowance of up to S$12,000 to help cover the expenses associated with a six month research residency at MIT;
•and co-supervision by an MIT and NTU/NUS faculty.

There is no bond associated with this fellowship.

Eligibility: A student must:
•have graduated with an undergraduate degree with first class or second-upper (or equivalent);
•be an incoming new PhD student not currently matriculated;

Five positions for doctoral students

In the context of a recently approved important research grant (“Concerted Research Action” GOA 2012/010) of the University’s Research Fund, entitled “Number sense: Analysis and improvement” five positions for doctoral students are available. The project will start in September 2011.

The central theme of the GOA project is the relationship between (the development of) “lower-order” and “higher-order” aspects of number sense and their relationship with school mathematics. The "lower order" characterization focuses on elementary sense of numerical magnitudes, including the rapid accurate perception of small numerosities and the ability to compare numerical magnitudes. Number sense from the higher-order perspective is considered to be much more complex and multifaceted in nature, comprising knowledge of and facility with numbers and operations (see attachment for more details). One part of the GOA project will focus on Number sense in statistics: statistical literacy (coordinator: Patrick Onghena). Students with a Master of Statistics are encouraged to apply.

Description of DREAM
Research within the DREAM ITN Network focuses on how the rights contained in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities can be transformed into practical applications. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities(UN CRPD, 2006) imposes legal obligations on States Parties to promote and achieve accessibility across the board for people with disabilities. This includes areas as diverse as access to Information and Communications Technologies and consumer goods and services more generally, access to employment, having legal capacity to act and take decisions, and access to independent living. Accessibility can be achieved through a variety of means, ranging from ensuring goods and services meet Design for All requirements, reasonable accommodation, non-discrimination, and inclusive social and economic policies and legislation. All Member States of the EU and the EEA have signed the Convention, as has
the European Union, and all have ratified or concluded the Convention, or are committed to doing so.
The DREAM ITN Network consists of the National University of Ireland, Galway, Technosite (Spain), Maastricht University (Netherlands), Uiversity of Leeds (UK), NOVA Norwegian Social Research Institute, the University of Iceland and the Swiss Paraplegic Research. In addition, the Network consists of eight associated partners such as leading civil society groups into which the researchers will spend some of their time. These include the European Disability Forum, Interights, Mental Disability Advocacy Centre and the European Group of National Human Rights Institutions and Digital Europe. Altogether 14 Early Stage Researchers (PhD researchers) will be recruited, two of which will be based at NOVA Norwegian Social Research Institute.
The DREAM ITN Network offers a unique, research environment where leading academics will integrate accepted applicants into their research teams. We will provide a structured training programme. This studentship will aim to understand the origin and evolution of wide-scale patterns of diversity in animals. It is currently not clear how environmental factors interact with speciation, extinction, and genetic and morphological rates of change to produce diversity. It is often assumed that these different measures of diversity are closely tied; for example, where there are more species we would expect greater morphological diversity.

There is a growing literature that suggests this is not the case: reproductive isolations can occur with little or no genetic change; genetically very closely related species can have wildly divergent morphologies; some large groups of species can be indistinguishable from gross morphology where as other, species-poor, groups are diverse. If this is the case how does diversity accumulate?

The student will address this question using cutting-edge statistical phylogenetic comparative methods applied to multiple datasets encompassing a wide range of animal groups. The studentship has the potential to contribute to a real quantitative science of macroevolution and has implications for life history, ecology, evolutionary biology, conservation and population biology. Questions related to the development of self-conscious emotions, to disorders involving social cognition in early psychosis, to the role of the goal encoding in the emergence of we-centric space.

Description
The Experienced Researcher (3 to at most 5 years / PhD, or 4 to at most 5 years / no PhD) working in Parma is expected to be involved in the investigation of critical factors for the emergence of we-centric space in social interaction. Questions to be considered are: how the emotion expressed by the observed agent facilitates the correct prediction of her motor intention? how the emotional state of the observer (experimental subject) affects the perception of the intentions behind actor`s actions?

what is the role of the motor intentionality in the emergence of we-centric space in social interaction? The research method used in the project will be high-density EEG (128 channels). Experience in biological signal analysis, with focus on EEG is requested. Source localization analysis experience and programming skills (Matlab) are welcome.

Overview
The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ is a research institution within the Helmholtz Association. It provides scientific contributions to the safeguarding of the natural basis of life and of human development potentialities for current and future generations under the challenges of global and climate change. In this way the UFZ contributes towards a sustainable development.

Starting on the 1st of March 2011, the Department of Proteomics at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research is offering a 3 year PhD student position (m/f) for species determination of biting midgets and detection of blue tongue virus using mass spectrometric analyses.

The successful candidate will work on the classification of different species / subgenera of biting midgets (genus Culicoides), some of which have been identified as vectors for a serious disease in livestock caused by the Bluetongue virus (BTB). The aim of the project is to establish mass spectrometry (MS) databases of peptides and small proteins that allow species identification in a manner complimentary to PCR-based assays. One part of the project will focus on species identification based on the spectral patterns of small proteins extracted from whole insects (intact protein profiling, IPP) via MALDI-MS. A second approach will deal with the analysis of peptides obtained by proteolysis of the insects` proteome and establishing identities and detection parameters for species-specific peptides. In order to be able to detect the signature of the respective peptides within the complex mixtures, this part will be performed using a high resolution nano-HPLC system coupled to a very sensitive hybrid triple quadrupole-linear ion trap instrument (QTrap MS). A third part of the project deals with the detection of capsid proteins of BTV and will use them for detecting virus-carrying midgets.

We are searching for a highly motivated, reliable person with a diligent workstyle who is interested in method development and fine tuning in the context of a project that aims to establish an application for identification of disease vectors relevant to animal health using state-of-the-art MS technologies.

The successful candidate will be working in a highly interdisciplinary research environment of biologists, chemists and biochemists with excellently equipped facilities (MALDI-TOF/TOF MS, QTrap MS, ion trap MS, LTQ Orbitrap MS – the latter ones being coupled with nano-HPLC systems). The ideal candidate has a background in proteomics / mass spectrometry and in entomology. Handling and analysis of MS data using dedicated software packages will constitute a major part of the project, hence, a general competence in the use of computers and experience with standard software (e.g. MS Office) are required. Further experience in the area of bioinformatics, in the handling of large data sets or in protein chemistry is a plus.

The place of work is the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, Leipzig, Germany. Salary will be according to the appropriate civil service level TVöD (65 %). Financial Support
BIGSSS offers 15 Ph.D. stipends of 1250 Euros/month for 36 months, contingent on successful completion of each year. The successful candidate will work on the classification of different species / subgenera of biting midgets (genus Culicoides), some of which have been identified as vectors for a serious disease in livestock caused by the Bluetongue virus (BTB). The aim of the project is to establish mass spectrometry (MS) databases of peptides and small proteins that allow species identification in a manner complimentary to PCR-based assays. One part of the project will focus on species identification based on the spectral patterns of small proteins extracted from whole insects (intact protein profiling, IPP) via MALDI-MS. A second approach will deal with the analysis of peptides obtained by proteolysis of the insects’ proteome and establishing identities and detection parameters for species-specific peptides. In order to be able to detect the signature of the respective peptides within the complex mixtures, this part will be performed using a high resolution nano-HPLC system coupled to a very sensitive hybrid triple quadrupole-linear ion trap instrument (QTrap MS). A third part of the project deals with the detection of capsid proteins of BTV and will use them for detecting virus-carrying midgets.

We are searching for a highly motivated, reliable person with a diligent workstyle who is interested in method development and fine tuning in the context of a project that aims to establish an application for identification of disease vectors relevant to animal health using state-of-the-art MS technologies.

The successful candidate will be working in a highly interdisciplinary research environment of biologists, chemists and biochemists with excellently equipped facilities (MALDI-TOF/TOF MS, QTrap MS, ion trap MS, LTQ Orbitrap MS – the latter ones being coupled with nano-HPLC systems). The ideal candidate has a background in proteomics / mass spectrometry and in entomology. Handling and analysis of MS data using dedicated software packages will constitute a major part of the project, hence, a general competence in the use of computers and experience with standard software (e.g. MS Office) are required. Further experience in the area of bioinformatics, in the handling of large data sets or in protein chemistry is a plus.

The place of work is the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, Leipzig, Germany. Salary will be according to the appropriate civil service level TVöD (65 %). Translating genomic information into medical care and public health is currently one of the main challenges in public health genomics. Genomic profiling, testing multiple genes simultaneously, is anticipated to improve prediction of risks of complex diseases and lead to personalized prevention and treatment strategies. To distinguish promising from premature applications, we investigate approaches for evaluating the usefulness of genomic profiling, which we illustrate with evaluations of commercially available tests and the new possibilities of whole genome sequencing. You will participate in this project.

You investigate the possibilities for the prediction of disease using whole genome sequencing. You write manuscripts for international scientific journals. These publications are the basis for your PhD thesis. NIHES courses leading up to a MSc degree in (genetic) epidemiology may be part of the project.

We are seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral fellows interested in cardiovascular projects we examine the inner workings of Ca2+ signaling and excitation-contraction coupling of the heart on the cellular and molecular level, both in health and in animal models of cardiac diseases. State-of-the art methods are applied including Ca2+ imaging with laser-scanning confocal microscopy and the whole-cell patch-clamp technique. We also offer the possibility to learn the recently developed technique of UV-laser and two-photon excitation photolysis of caged compounds. For further details see our web-site. Deskripsi Program

Pendidikan Politeknik di Indonesia merupakan pendidikan vokasi, sehingga pengembangan dosennya harus mempertimbangkan karakteristik dari pendidikan vokasi yang lebih banyak melibatkan keterampilan. Dalam rangka pengembangan tenaga dosen politeknik, Fakultas Ilmu Komputer -Universitas Indonesia merasa terpanggil untuk mengembangkan program magister bidang Teknologi Informasi yang berorientasi pada aspek terapan. Program ini dirancang untuk meningkatkan keterampilan dan pengembangan profesionalisme dosen/calon dosen Politeknik negeri/swasta. Program Joint Degree ini merupakan hasil kerjasama antara Fakultas Ilmu Komputer Universitas Indonesia (Fasilkom UI) dengan Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering, University of Canberra (ISE-UC). Peserta program ini sepenuhnya akan dibiayai oleh Direktorat Jenderal Pendidikan Tinggi (DIKTI), Departemen Pendidikan Nasional.

Program ini bukanlah merupakan program terminal sehingga lulusan program ini berhak untuk melanjutkan ke jenjang Doktoral, baik program Doktoral.

Persyaratan

Peserta program ini harus memenuhi persyaratan berikut ini:

•Terdaftar sebagai dosen/calon dosen Politeknik negeri ataupun swasta.
•Memiliki ijazah S1 atau D-IV pada bidang Ilmu Komputer/Informatika, Sistem Informasi, Teknologi Informasi, maupun bidang-bidang lain yang terkait seperti Teknik Elektronika, Matematika.
•Memiliki IPK minimum 2,75.
•Memiliki nilai TOEFL (boleh institusional) minimum 500 atau nilai IELTS minimum 5.0.
•Umur maksimum 40 tahun.
•Lulus ujian seleksi yang diselenggarakan oleh Universitas Indonesia.
Sebelum berangkat ke University of Canberra pada tahun kedua, peserta sudah harus memperoleh nilai IELTS minimum 6.0.

Masa Studi

Program ini dirancang dalam waktu 2 (dua) tahun. Pada tahun pertama perkuliahan dilakukan di Magister Teknologi Informasi Universitas Indonesia (MTI-UI) dan pada tahun kedua perkuliahan dilakukan di Master of Information Technology University of Canberra (MIT-UC) termasuk untuk penyelesaian Tesis/Karya Akhir.

Gelar

Setelah menyelesaikan perkuliahan di kedua Universitas, peserta akan mendapatkan gelar Magister Teknologi Informasi dari Universitas Indonesia dan Master of Information Technology dari University of Canberra.

Kurikulum

Program Magister Teknologi Informasi adalah program yang dirancang untuk memberikan pengetahuan dan keterampilan di bidang Teknologi Informasi di berbagai tingkatan, baik operasional, manajerial maupun strategis. Kurikulum Program Joint Degree ini merupakan paduan antara kurikulum yang dimiliki oleh program MTI-UI dan MIT-UC, yang secara ringkas bisa dilihat pada tabel berikut ini.

Fasilitas

Selama perkuliahan, mahasiswa akan mendapatkan akses internet dan email, akses ke laboratorium komputer, akses perpustakaan dan jurnal online, serta berbagai fasilitas yang diberikan oleh Universitas Indonesia dan University of Canberra.

Untuk mendaftar pada program ini, peserta harus mengikuti prosedur penerimaan yang sudah ditetapkan oleh Universitas Indonesia. Project Title: Economic Impacts of EU’s Preferential Trade Agreements on Developing Countries Project Description:
The aim of this PhD project is to analyse economic impacts of preferential trade agreements between the EU and the chosen developing countries. GLOBE computable general equilibrium model and the Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) representation of Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) database will be used to simulate various trade liberalisation scenarios, depending on the contents of the preferential trade agreements. The main focus will be on economic effects of such preferential trade agreements on developing economies. Depending on the applicant’s research interests, developing countries chosen can either be i-)Latin American, ii-) African or Asian economies. When deciding about the developing countries, the student needs to make sure that they are in Global Trade Analysis Project’s (GTAP) database, which is the main database that will be used for this project. Applicants will need to justify their choice of developing countries during the application and interview processes. They will produce a research proposal of not more than 2,000 words that outlines and justifies the proposed research question, identifies any additional data requirements and details the proposed work programme.

In the framework of the EU Integrated Project “From data sharing and integration via VPH models to personalised medicine” (p-medicine), the research unit on “Systems Biomedicine” at the Department of Experimental Oncology of the European Institute of Oncology, invites applications for a postdoctoral candidate for one year with a strong interest in mathematical and computational modelling of cancer growth and anti-cancer therapies.

The focus of the unit is on the trans-disciplinary use of mathematics and physics to model cancer related biological phenomena, for better understanding of biological experiments and clinical trials.

The location of work is Milan (Italy).

The successful candidate will have to work on the development, at multiple spatio-temporal scales, of realistic mathematical and computational models for:

3 Postdoctoral Positions in Normal and malignant Stem Cell Research at Finsen Laboratory and BRIC, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark

As part of the newly established NNF Stem Cell Centre, DANSTEM, three postdoctoral positions are available in the group of Professor Bo Porse at the Finsen Laboratory, Rigshospitalet / BRIC, University of Copenhagen.

Postdoctoral areas of research
We are interested in the underlying mechanisms governing the properties of normal and malignant stem cells.

Our main focus is, very broadly, how the control of gene expression contributes to the biology of normal hematopoietic stem cells and how this control is altered in acute myeloid leukemia. Research in the group involves the use of a number of experimental systems including human patient samples as well as genetically modified mouse models.
We have strong expertise in multicolor flow cytometry and use a number of genomic techniques – such as ChIP-seq to assess transcription factor binding and epigenetic configurations as well as microarray and sequencing-based (RNA-seq) gene expression profiling. Importantly, the interpretation of these data is supported by a number of “in-group” bioinformaticians as well as extensive collaborations with the neighboring Bioinformatics Centre.

Qualifications A PhD degree in Science, Life Sciences or corresponding qualifications are prerequisite  At least one first author publication is required in the field(s) of stem cell biology, hematology, cancer research or regulation of mammalian gene expression Ambition and strong motivation to excel Terms of salary, work and employment All three positions are fixed-term: Two of the positions are for each 3 years and the third is for 2 years. They are scheduled to start summer 2011 or after agreement. Salary, pension and terms of employment follow the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Academics Central Organization. Currently, the monthly postdoc salary begins around 4.200€ including supplement plus pension of around 720€. Depending on qualifications, a higher salary may be negotiated. Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reduction, if they have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.
Formally, the employment is at BRIC, University of Copenhagen, while the daily place of work is at the Finsen Laboratory. The starting date is 01 October 2011. The network includes 7 academic and industrial groups from across the European Union as well as several associate partners from the US and EU. The doctoral programme will provide a range of educational and research opportunities focused on Transport and Signalling mechanism in Polarized Cells, a topic at the interface of Cell/Molecular Biology and Membrane Physics.
This project will explore the impact of lipid composition on membrane mechanics and lateral organisation, and the consequences on membrane shape and trans-membrane trafficking. The effects due to membrane-bound proteins and generally arising in membranes that mimic realistic biological structures will also be investigated, partly in collaboration with other ITN partners.
Candidates with some experience in soft matter physics, optical trapping, instrument automation and/or biological physics are welcome. A basic knowledge of cell biology is also desirable. In addition to proven experimental skills the candidate should have a strong interest in the theoretical background of these experiments. Characterization tools such as image/video analysis will be used and developed. The research training will be towards a PhD and therefore applicants must also gain admission as a graduate student. According to EU regulations, candidates can be of any nationality. They should have less than 4 years of research experience and should not have resided in the United Kingdom for more than 12 months during the past 3-year period.

Postdoc Position molecular cell biology/ biochem at UCSD School of Medicine, San Diego, CA

A postdoctoral position is available immediately in the laboratory of George Sen, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Dermatology, Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, UCSD School of Medicine, San Diego, CA.that control epidermal stem cell self-renewal and differentiation. We have recently shown that both DNA methylation and Histone modifications are extremely critical to stem cell function and differentiation (Nature. 2010, 463: 563-567; Genes Dev. 2008, 22: 1865-1870).

Nature of Job : The projects focus on identifying and characterizing the role of novel epigenetic factors in epidermal stem cell self-renewal, differentiation, and tumorigenesis.

Qualifications: We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow with significant experience in cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology techniques.Applicants should have a PHD or MD/PHD in molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, or a related field.

Salary : Salary is commensurate with experience and will follow university guidelines. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

The successful candidate should have a good publication record, and experience in cell and molecular biology. Desired skills include small animal surgery, isolation and culture of epidermal stem cells, bioinformatics, and protein purification.
